The CSS Design Awards are the digital industry’s go-to destination for inspiration, trends and creativity. For their much-anticipated 2018 Website of the Year experience they collaborated with WONDR, tasking us to deliver a compelling event brand and website that communicated the vibrant creativity of the community that powers CSS Design Awards.

01. Creative Strategy & Brand Language

Thriving Creativity.
Connected Community.

We developed the concept of a ‘Neon Coral’, a metaphor that encompassed thriving creativity and crucially, the idea of community. Through a vast sea of noise and debris on the internet, the CSS Design Awards stands apart as a thriving creative habitat. Read the ‘making of’ interview here.

We created the 3D hero coral by dressing it with neon plant life and lighting it with hues of pink and cyan.

We also created a range of secondary corals that included the trophy, crystals and our jellyfish (named Squee).

02. User Interaction & Frontend Design

Electrifying the Neon Coral.

Having developed the Coral narrative we then translated our visual concept into the a wider digital experience. This gave us the opportunity to breathe life into our exotic, electric habitat through motion and frontend design.

Harmonising the movements with the concept was important to the tonality of the website experience.

To that end typography and the Neon Coral were coded to move with mouse movements, mimicking the underwater sense of floating.

We agonised over getting movement lifelike to ensure the underwater feeling was achieved.

03. Social Media

Colonising Social Channels.

Naturally, being a community powered website, social channels were a vital aspect of the overall strategy. To facilitate sharing we developed and shared a range of post-ready static and video assets to CSSDA judges and winners.

You helped to inspire hundreds of thousands of digital creatives across the planet and helped grow the digital design industry as a whole.
